After long and dark winter, the weather here in not so foggy Londontown has finally perked up to sandal status. The hispters have moved from cardigans to vintage t shirts and the girls are looking fit as all. They love their jean shorts here. I’ve got 3 exams down and one to go on Tuesday before my summer vacation officially begins and I’m pretty much back in summer mode. Almost forgot what it’s like to be a student with a 3 month summer break peeking over your shoulder. And who doesn’t like summer time in NYC?
Every summer I make a play list of songs that I listen to as the summer goes on. Some may be new and others are old but it helps me keep track of all the stuff I’m into over the summer. If I’m lucky enough that my computer doesn’t crash, I listen to them again years down the line and re-live a little part of that summer for like 15 minutes.
This summer’s playlist is off to a good start, below are a few of the songs I know I’ll be listening to a lot over the next three months. Not sure if Darwin Deez is popular in the States but he is blowing up over here. Since I first heard “Radar Detector” the song has really grown on me and I’m really digging the whole album, I can see him getting big. Check out the music video after the jump, he’s so hip it hurts. The September remix is making the rounds at some of the college bars around here, and I couldn’t think of a better fist pumping anthem for the summer. Videos after the jump.

As my first year in London comes to a close, while I’m excited to be back in the States next week, I can’t wait to get back here in September, love this city. This was a great year with some amazing friends and incredible experiences, thanks to all of you that were there for the ride.
Another week spent studying, another week closer to summer back in the city. This time around, its been the new National album that gets me through those lonely nights riding half empty buses through the deserted streets of London. This is hands down my favorite album of the last few months, could even be my favorite of the year even though its only May. From start to finish, High Violet is just incredible. The first song I heard off of it was “Afraid of Everyone” but what got me hooked was when I saw the special video for “Terrible Love” on Pitchfork:
Unfortunately, I care a little too much about school and passed on tickets to a sold out show at the Royal Albert Music Hall a couple of weeks ago, I won’t be making that mistake again next time they come to town. Here are a few of my favorite tracks from the album, if you like these, definitely get the whole thing.
- Paans
UPDATE: We’ve been requested to take the tracks down, but for the hell of it, some of my favorite songs off the new album are Conversation 16, Lemonworld, Runaway. You can find some of their new songs, plus some old ones here on their Myspace page. Happy hunting.
Apparently Pan is in China, that explains the gchat absence, hope he’s drowning in baijiu right now as I write this. I wish I was drowning that awful stuff right now, exam season is upon me. I’ve moved into the library, but thankfully they got some bean bags to put near all the computers downstairs, really makes it all worth it. Went to the Foals show here in London a few nights ago, it was off the hook, the crowd was insane, thing turned into a big pit with beer flying everywhere. People went nuts when they played “Cassius” and I thought “Spanish Sahara” was incredible. Anywho, one of the only things that’s helped me get through my days staring at graphs and economic models has been listening to music on hypem (the other being this). I thought I’d leave you with some of my favorites from the past week or two. Lots of people like some smooth jazz or Bach when they study, I like to put a little pep in my step, thats’s just how I roll, or maybe it’s my steady diet of coffee and cigarettes, same difference. Enjoy.

Alright kids, before I take off for China I want to leave you guys with something special: Hey Champ. I discovered these 3 guys from Chicago last year when I heard their Beaches and Friends Remix but unfortunately missed them at Lolla. Their single Cold Dust Girl (off of their soon to be released debut album) has etched itself as one of my top summer jams. It’s very upbeat and synthful and just the way I like it. It was because of this song’s video that Lupe Fiasco called them up to open for him. Since then the trio has performed with the likes of “Justice, Sebastian Tellier, The Sounds, and Kid Sister just to name a few”. They’re on the verge of blowing up so make sure to get their album when it comes out July 13th. Hope you enjoy it like I do. I’ll be back in 2 weeks.

So I turned 25 yesterday, had a great time with some great friends. Figured I’d do list post as I haven’t done one of those on here yet. So without further ado, here are 10 of my favorite songs from my early 20s, yep feels weird saying that. In no particular order:
Funeral is hands down one of my favorite albums of all time, each song is great and I love how they all come together when the album is play in order. Was hard to choose a single track that I liked more than others, so I’ll just go with the first song from The Arcade Fire that I had heard when they first hit the scene, coincidentally the first song on the album.

This song by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was one of my favorite party songs from back in the day, lots of energy and just a fun song overall.

I went through a big Elliot Smith phase in college and this is my favorite song off of either or.

Another one of my favorite bands in college was Interpol. I couldn’t get enough of them and even went to a few of their shows. I’m not the biggest fan of their newer stuff, but their first two albums were incredible. I couldn’t think of a better way to start off an album than the first two track on Turn on the Bright Lights, here’s the second of those two tracks

I was big into Atmosphere back in the day, I loved the themes of his songs and his sort of self-deprecating style. It was hard to choose just one track to put on here, but here’s one of my favorite songs from Seven’s Travels

The Pixies are one of those bands that would have changed my life if I had discovered them when I was younger. I only really got into them in college but am still in awe of how ground breaking they were. I can hear their influence in a ton of the stuff I listen to these days. “Hey” is hands down my favorite song, they are playing here in London this summer and I’m pretty bummed that I’ll be home in the States and won’t get to see them.

And now for the emo portion of the post, two songs that I found myself listening to over and over as the years go on. It was hard to pick a Death Cab song but I’d guess that either “Tiny Vessels” or “Title and Registration” was my favorite. “One More Night” is also one of those ones that gets stuck in your head and you reflect on your own life experiences when you here it, well at least I do.

Last winter, I really got into Bon Iver (yeah, ironic) and this is definitely my favorite song. I remember the first time I heard it, I put it on loop and couldn’t stop.

Lastly but certainly not least, the King dropped this track and its one of those that instantly puts me in a good mood when I hear it. Many a good memory were had cruising around Chicago in my car with this blasting. I miss my early twenties already.

In lieu of the Wall Street witch hunt, I’m dedicating this post to the other group in America who (a) think they’re hot shit, (b) have a penchant for designer clothing and (c) love buying models & bottles at the clubs…
You guessed it…RAPPERS. Talk about ostentatious and utterly stupid displays of wealth, there’s no one that does it better than these guys. They make the denizens of Broad and Wall look JV. Here are your usual suspects.
